Text | JONAS ZOELLNER Jonas Zoellner, 87, pioneer Scottsbluff and Deadwood, S. D., merchant, died Monday evening at 6 o'clock at a hospital in Los Angeles, Calif. He was stricken ill Monday morning. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. The body will be brought to Scottsbluff for burial. His son, Charles I. Zoellner of Scottsbluff, will leave for Los Angeles this morning. Mr. Zoellner and made his home in California since August, 1937. A resident of Scottsbluff since 1912, he retired from business on his on his 86th birthday, July 6, 1937. Mr. Zoellner and a brother, Charles, opened a clothing store at Deadwood, S.D., in 1877, during the Black Hills gold rush. In August, 1906, Mr. Zoellner and his son, Charles I., opened the Scottsbluff store as a branch. Jonas Zoellner moved here in 1912. At one time Zoellner & Son operated stores in Scottsbluff, Sterling, Bayard and Gering. Mr. Zoellner was born in Breslau, Germany, July 6, 1851. He came to the United States in 1871 and opened a cigar store at Memphis, Tenn., going from there to Deadwood. He was married to Miss Annie Goldberg at Central City, S. D., Feb. 19, 1882. Mrs. Zoellner died here Aug. 28, 1935. Mr. Zoellner was a life member of the Shrine and Consistory orders of Masonry, a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Blue lodge of Masonry and the Naja temple of the Shrine. He became a member of the Scottsbluff Rotary club Nov. 22, 1923. On his retirement, he was named a life member of Rotary. He was a charter member of the Scottsbluff Elks lodge and first was affiliated with the Elks order in South Dakota. Zoellner & Son was a charter member of the Scottsbluff Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Zoellner had traveled extensively, visiting frequently on the Pacific coast, and in nearly every large city in the eastern United States. In 1923 he spent six months in France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, England and Czechoslovakia. Only survivors are a son, Charles I., of Scottsbluff, and a granddaughter, Mrs. Alan Williams, of Lincoln. | |
