Text | Honored Pioneer Laid To Rest Tues., Jan. 18 John Silas Tyler, third child of William and Sarah Tyler, was born in New York City on September 29, 1859, and lived there until he was about 7 years of age when the family moved west and located at Red Wing, Minnesota, where he grew to young manhood. In January, 1884, he was united in marriage to Rebecca Taylor of Red Wing, Minnesota. To this union two children were born; Della Barg (now deceased) and Mattie Potter of White. About 30 years ago, Mr. Tyler and family moved to White where he spent the remainder of his life with the exception of a few winters spent in California. Here his two daughters grew to womanhood and were married. On December 1, 1929 his wife died and was buried in the White Cemetery. June 13, 1930, he was united in marriage to Alice Tyler of Red Wing, Minn., who has been his devoted wife and companion since. He was a patient sufferer from a complication of ailments. After all that loving hands and medical skill could do at home and at Brookings, he was removed to the Luther hospital at Watertown on January 8. Sunday morning at 4:00 o'clock. January 16, 1938, he closed his eyes in eternal sleep at the age of 78 years, 3 months and 18 days. He leaves those near and dear to him; his wife Alice, one daughter, Mattie Potter, and 8 grandchildren, Mrs. Avis Farley of Millbank, S. Dak., Earl and John Barg of California, and Fayette Barg; Mrs. Anita Gibbs of Sioux Falls, Erma, Mavis and Eunice Potter of White. Mr. Tyler was a kind and loving husband and father. He did his best to live an upright and christian life. In January, 1921, he united with the M. E. Church in White and was a faithful attendant as long as his health permitted. We will miss him as will also his many friends. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon from the home and the Methodist church with he Rev. G.A. Doolittle officiating. Interment was made in Fairview Cemetery. | |
