Matthew Simpson and Anna Tyler and Family
By Chester Tyler and Wanda Tyler
Matthew Simpson Tyler, the son of Sarah Purvis and William Tyler, was born in New York City on Feb. 26, 1861. In the fall of that year, he moved with his parents to Red Wing, Minn., where he received his education. In 1880, he came to South Dakota and homesteaded a farm in Sherman Township, two miles south and one and three-quarter miles east of White. Simpson's grandson, Ronald Tyler, lives on the farm now. Anna Elizabeth Headley, the daughter of George and Priscilla Sweazey Headley, was born in Dillsboro, Ind., on Oct. 14, 1871. In 1878, she moved with her parents to a homestead in Argo Township, and spent her childhood here. She vividly remembered the sod hut, the prairies with no trees, and the tall grass with the fear of grass fires. One day when she was a child, she heard a knock on the door; thinking it was the mailman, she yelled at him to come in. When the door opened, an Indian walked in. She was really frightened, but the Indian only wanted a meal and then went on his way. Anna Headley and Matthew Simpson Tyler were married on March 5, 1891.
The Tylers moved into the new house that Simpson had built for his bride and worked hard to improve their homestead. They lived on the farm until 1912, when they moved three-quarter mile west and their son, Roy, took over the operation of the homestead. Simpson and Anna were members of the Methodist Church. Simpson was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and the Ancient Order of United Workmen. He died April 22, 1921. After the death of her husband, Anna continued to live on the farm until her marriage to Charles Farnsworth on July 22, 1925. Charles Farnsworth died Oct. 31, 1942. Anna made her home in White until her death on Jan. 8, 1954.
M.S. And Anna Tyler were the parents of three children; Roy, Chester, and Blanche, Mrs. Ben Hartley. All three children remained in the White area.
