I love this document!! It tells us that John Cecil born 1721 was ALIVE in 1735, and so did not die earlier than that. It also confirms presence of daughter, Elizabeth. As I also speculate, Phillip named his children after himself, his wife, his brother (John), his father (William) and Joshua...after Judge Joshua?? I have always suspected that William's dead wife was named Mary based upon this...and Phillip and Elizabeth did have a Susannah (after lost sister Susan?) who apparently was not alive in 1735 (or at least not at home). 555 In his great-grandson's will (Asa, b. 1753), said to have been one of the earliest settlers in Virginia, settling on the south side of the James River, above old Jamestown, and was of old English stock.

Capt. John came to the US on the ship "Paule" in 1635. He left the Port of London 6 July 1635. [I left this in, but it is unlikely that it is correct. The John who came over on the Paule more likely is the one described in THE BISHOP FAMILY, discussed below.]

There is a great deal of confusion of the John Bishop line shown by Bobby Gerald Adams in THE BISHOP FAMILY, 1982, and the Capt. John Bishop line.

Some think his wife Elizabeth may have been the sister of George Menefee/Menifee, but I think that the other John Bishop (shown by B.G. Adams) is a much better candidate........DNB

558 In the Greenville Mountaineer, Feb. 18, 1848, issue, there was a marriage notice: Married on Jan 19 by J. W. Barker, Esq., Mr. John Bishop to Miss Louisa Hawkins, both of Chickasaw Co., MS. This implies a SC connection, and Bernadine L. Bishop verified that the John Bishop referenced is the John who was the son of Joseph Bishop and Jane Cunningham. Family (F964)

559 In the Padgett Creek Baptist Cemetery, Union Co., SC, there is a Nancy Turner (5-10-1810 - 5-11-1871, wife of John Turner) buried next to a John Turner (d. 3-26-1856, age 63 yrs. 2 days). Also, a James C. Turner (d. 2-17-1863, age 33 yrs., son of John and Nancy Turner, CSA Vet). BISHOP, Nancy (I3670)

560 It has been assumed (and debated!) by over 200 years of genealogists that William's sons John and Phillip, given to the Duvalls in 1697/8, are the same men who appear in later PGC records. In the case of John Cecil of PGC, this is supported by several pieces of evidence:

John Cecil, a landowner in Prince George's County, married Elizabeth Sollars in Queen Ann's Parish, PGC in 1718.
Elizabeth's mother was presumably one Ann Sabrett Sullivan Sollars.
John and Elizabeth's children were probably Zephaniah, Samuel W., Sabrett and Thomas. (references for this not cited here).
They may have had sons William and James
Samuel Cecil was William's administrator, assisted by John (possibly William's son and Samuel's father?), Sabrett and Thomas.
Samuel W. Cecil was wed to Rebecca White, who was christened in Queen Ann's parish by Rev. Jacob Henderson, who wed the widow of Mareen Duvall the Immigrant, Mary Duvall Ridgely. It is assumed that Mareen's son, Mareen the Elder, was the one to whom William Cecil bound his children.
Obviously there was close association of all these people. It is possible that the William who died in 1749 was not John Cecil's father but another relative, such as an unknown son of William the widower of 1697/8...but this is speculation. Most genealogists accept that this William was John's father and Samuel's grandfather.

Phillip Cecil was also a landowner in PGC. He wed Elizabeth ?? (probably Gittings) around 1715, and died in March of 1733. According to the accounting of his estate, he left children Susannah, Mary, Elizabeth, John, William, Joshua and Phillip Jr. Phillip was probably the son of William Cecil and the younger brother of John Cecil. However, his widow Elizabeth stated in court that her dead husband had "...no relation to ye deceased in this Province," an assertion which has troubled genealogists for years.

If this was actually Elizabeth Gittings Cecil, she was the daughter of Phillip Gittings and Ann Sprigg, gentry of the area. Some genealogists have speculated that since she was the daughter of a gentleman, she might have been embarrassed by her husband's lowly relatives. However, John Cecil's wife Elizabeth Sollars was the daughter and sister of gentlemen, and John died with a respectable amount of property. William Cecil's estate of about 113 pounds puts him in the middle class of his time. Phillip Cecil's estate left nothing but debts and property which he had purchased from his brother in law. This speculation does not hold up.

However, other lines of evidence do converge to allow the assumption that Phillip and John Cecil were brothers. John's son Samuel and Phillip's daughter Elizabeth Cecil Whitten traveled in the same group to Western Virginia about 1767. The names of the Perre, Dent, Sprigg, Beall, Duvall and Pile families appear with those of Phillip and John Cecil too often for mere coincidence.

Some genealogies show him as the son Thomas CECIL(d.1662), an engraver of London who came to MD to make maps, and was paid in land. He later returned to England where he died. Supposedly, he was the son of Thomas CECIL(1544-1622), Lord Burghley, who m.1564 Dorothy, dau John NEVILLE. This line is unproven, and the current consensus of Cecil researcher is that John was the son of William, q.v.
Also seen him as the descendent of a Henry CECIL (b.1577), grandson of Lord Burleigh (the Great Cecil).

562 It is commonly believed that James Clayton McCall was buried on July 7th, 1863 on the now submerged Small Pox Island. Research has proven that the first burial on Small Pox Island occurred in August 1863 and continued until March 1865. Since James died before any other recorded burials on Small Pox Island, he must have been buried in the Confederate Cemetery in Alton, Madison Co., Illinois. This deduction was made with the assistance of Don Huber, Town Supervisor, City of Alton, Madison Co., Illinois during a phone conversation on Feb. 10, 2003.........FS3

NOTES: 1st Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry

1st Cavalry Regiment was assembled during the spring of 1862. Its
companies were recruited in the counties of Carroll, De Soto,
Tishomingo, Itawamba, Quitman, Noxubee, Bolivar and Pontotoc.
The unit served in the Department of Mississippi and East
Louisiana, then was assigned to W.H. Jackson's, Ross', Cosby's,
and F.C. Armstrong's Brigade, Department of Alabama, Mississippi,
and East Louisiana. It contained 22 officers and 220 men in July
1862 and confronted the Federals in various conflicts in
Mississippi. Later the regiment was involved in the operations in
North Alabama and Middle Tennessee where its casualties were 2
killed and 27 wounded. It went on to fight in North Georgia and
Alabama but only a few surrendered in May 1865. The field
officers were Colonel R.A. Pinson, Lieutenant Colonel F.A.
Montgomery, and Majors John S. Simmons and E.G. Wheeler.

563 It is not proved that the Edmund who married Anna and lived in Spartanburg, SC, is the same one later found in Lawrence Co., MS, but there is so much circumstantial evidence that I am placing him here, seeking proof. Due to the apparent difference in ages of the children, I wonder if Edmund may have remarried before the birth of the last 3 children. An Edmond Bishop married Anna Russell October 18, 1810 in Maury Co, TN; wonder if related.

The following was received 10/11/97 from Jack Coffee :
I have part of a will, found in Lawrence Co., prepared by an Edmund Bishop circa 1826. The document is very fragile and only part of it was found in the file. It reads as follows:

In the name of God Amen I Edmund Bishop of Laurence county and State of Mississippi knowing the certainty of death (torn) uncertainty of life do make this my last will and testament in the words following to wit the land and all the rest of my property to belong to my wife Anna Bishop and my three youngest children George Sarah and Benjamin Bishop only George to have the young cold [colt?] as his own right and property and to reduct the amount of the value thare of out of his part when tha [they] all come of age my wife to hold all in hur [her] hands during her... then, it ends!

568 Janet Sweet: According to the Richey descendants chart from Jackie Sanders, 4303 S. Cole St., Morrison, CO 80465-1137, the Richey family seems to have moved from Pendleton Dist SC to Jefferson Co. AL by 1820, as John and Martha's 8th child Matilda Caroline and subsequent children were born in Blount Springs, Jefferson Co. AL. I am guessing that Elias Bishop and Mary Alice Cowan Richey married in Blount Springs, Jefferson Co. AL, as the Richey chart shows they married in AL. Annie and Iola Bishop believe Elias was born in SC.

Indicative of other Bishops in Jefferson Co. AL, we have a will written in anticipation of death by a John Bishop dated 17 Mar 1840 in Jefferson Co. AL mentioning children John, son I.I.S.H.P., Charlotte Turner, Andria Turner, (son-in-law John Turner), Cynthia Addis Snow, Joseph, son William's widow Elizabeth, son E. S., grandson John Perry Bishop (don't know whose child), and a Margaret Bishop Lawrence (doesn't say daughter.) Executors are William Taylor of Jefferson Co. and George W. Patrick of St. Clair Co. AL. Witnesses were Mines Yancy, William Nance, and James Taylor. We don't know how John and Elizabeth Bishop are connected to us, but surely they are; John could be an uncle of Elias.

Elias's middle initial is "S", not "B." I don't know what the S stands for, but I do know it is definitely S. It is recorded several places as B, but ... Jefferson County, AL: Page 219. Elias S. Bishop and wife Mary to Samuel Turner, 16 September 1839..............DNB

570 Jill Adair: 1) I believe Allen died in Hamilton, Marion Co., AL instead of Spartanburg. We know Allen left SC abt 1818, and his 2 children after that date were born in AL.
2) I have that Missouri Bishop was born in 1818 and not 1808. She married in 1838, probably at 20 and not 30.
3) James Bishop's middle name was Merrick and he married Patience Lewis on 14 Sep 1842.
4) I think there was one more son -- Allen, Jr. born 1811 in Spartanburg.

Kennedy: left Spartanburg Sunday, 13 Sept 1818, for AL

I believe that John Allen Bishop who married Dorcas (Dorcus) (Paulk) Polk was Allen Bishop, Jr., son of Allen Bishop and Margaret "Peggy" Lewis. The computer records show the Bishop who married Dorcas Polk only as Allen; not sure where I got the second name "John". That would mean that Allen Bishop who married Margaret Lewis probably was John Allen, and everything (name, place, dates) fits perfectly........DNB

573 John Harrison Hallford had a general store west of the Elm Fork River of the upper Trinity in Denton County. It was near the Dallas and later Tarrant Counties' northeast corner. This area in Denton County was called Hallford Prairie. He, with his brother-in-law, James Gibson, were the first Deacons of the Lonesome Dove Baptist Church. Melissa Medlin Hallford was the first Deaconess of this church organized in February, 1846 a few miles southwest in Navarro, later Tarrant, County Texas, and also in the 1850 census of Moniteau County, Missouri. Church minutes prove they returned by 1851. They went to Hays County, Texas late in 1854.

"Died--At Wolf's Crossing, Burnet County, Texas September 20th, A.D., 1881, John H. Hallford, aged 65 years. He was born in the State of Kentucky, A.D. 1816, removed to Moniteau County, Missouri, at about the age of six years. Thence to Denton county, Texas, A.D. 1844, then to Travis county in 1854, where he resided until a few month prior to his death, he moved to Burnet county.

"He professed faith in Christ at the age of 18 years, joined the Baptist church in Platt [sic] County, Missouri, was ordained as a deacon in the Lonesome Dove Baptist Church, Tarrant County, Texas, A.D. 1846, and since that time has served as a deacon to the cause of Christ, giving liberally to the support of the gospel, his house long being the home of the minister. He was confirmed by consumption about six weeks and passed to his reward in the full triumphs of a faith in Jesus. A.J.H"

"Kimball Fairall, who lives just south of Weldon, filed information
Monday before Justice Harvey charging Clive Merrill, son of J. H.
Merrill, the auctioneer, with seduction. The young lady in the case,
Miss Artha Fairall, gave birth to a child last Sunday and named young
Merrill as the author of her ruin. Deputy Sheriff Burns served the
justice's warrant and brought the young man to town where after some
discussion he agreed to remedy the unfortunate matter as nearly as
possible. On Tuesday afternoon a license was secured and in company
with the officer Mr. Merrill drove to the home of the girl's parents
where a minister from Weldon performed the marriage ceremony."

586 LESTER GEORGE GRIFFITH
Feb 9,1920-Jan 23,2010

Lester George Griffith, 89, died at Kimball Health Service on January 23, 2010. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball with Reverend Roger Gillming officiating. Burial will be held in the Dix Cemetery. He was born February 9, 1920 on a farm south of Clarinda, Iowa. He was the first son of Harry Stillwell and Gertrude Hazel (Patee) Griffith. The family moved to western Nebraska in 1921 when Lester was one year old. He attended school in the Dix, NE area and high school in Dix. He married Dorothy Darline Spencer in Laramie, WY on June 3, 1939, a local teacher who lived with the family teaching in the local school. Growing up as a farmers son, he became a farmer himself and farmed all his life until his retirement. No matter what the weather was, he related it to the crops that it would raise. In the late 50s he worked as a mechanic for a local implement dealer in Kimball. Later, in the late 60s and early 70s he was a deputy sheriff in Kimball County. During this same time, he sold and repaired business band radios in his shop on the farm. He was also a dealer for Crustbuster farm equipment. As necessity is the mother of invention, he manufactured his own repairs and other ideas only to have similar items patented by others in later years. In the early 50s and 60s he owned several airplanes and received his commercial license only to stop flying because of failing eyesight. There is still evidence of his registered air strip on the farm northeast of Kimball.? Besides farming, one of his greatest loves was camping.? He also spent many winters as a winter Texan visiting with new acquaintances and escaping the cold Nebraska winters.

587 Letter from Donna B. Serwin, 503 Cap Rock, Richardson, Tx 75080 dated Nov 18, 1981: I will try to tell you what I know about my Rebecca. I do not know all of her children. She was shown on the 1850 Scott Co, Ar census married to William Kellogg who was born in Ar. They had 2 children, MaryI. age 2 and Minirva age 1, both born in Ar. My great-grandfather, Stephen Kellogg, was born April 18, 1853 according to family information and his death certificate. My aunt told us that his mother's name was Rebecca Oller. He was supposedly born near Mene, Ar. He died August 1, 1941, buried in Coleman, Tx. Cemetery, no marker. According to family info he had one sister, Millie Ann Kellogg Hamilton. She is supposed to be buried in Coryell Co, Tx. Walnut Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, but I have no dates on her birth or death.

I have not been able to check out that cemetery yet, but I will. And I do not know if she is one of the daughters listed on the 1850 census or if she was born later. She possibly may have been born near Little Rock. Rebecca's husband, Willian Kellogg, supposedly was killed in the Civil War although we have found no record yet--we are still searching. She then married Wind Gaston.

I found them in Bastrop Co, Tx in 1870--no children other than Steve Kellogg with them then. But according to family members, she had a son by Gaston named Bev Gaston. He was raised by my great-grandfather, Steve Kellogg. I assume she is buried somewhere in the Bastrop, Tx area, but have not been able to sear hit yet--but someday I will!
So all I know for sure is 4 children--Mary, Minerva (assuming that MillieAnn is one of those girls), Steve Kellogg, and Bev Gaston.
