  1. 1.  BISHOP, William Glover was born about 1738 in Granville Co., North Carolina (son of BISHOP, Henry and Mary); died on 10 Aug 1823 in Spartanburg, SC.

    Notes:

Demastus (demastus@aol.com): Shows the full name to be William Glover Bishop; much of the info on descendants of Matthew Bishop from him. He got middle name from someone else and I am trying to check it out, but no response yet. Later, Michael Bishop confirmed middle name thru land sale records.

RE: William Glover Bishop's middle name. One probable connection.
Henry Bishop and son Joseph Bishop held the rank of Sergeant in the 1754 North Carolina Colonial Militia, Colonel Eaton's Regiment. Henry's sons John and George were Privates. Captain John "Johnny" Glover was in charge of the Granville Co. Company. John Glover's father, Joseph Glover and brother, William Glover also served in this Company. The Glover's were apparently close neighbors and could have moved into NC at the same time, as Joseph Glover's father, William Glover was from VA.
Another point. A deed abstract, Jan. 25, 1768, Mecklenburg Co., NC. William Glover Bishop to William Barron was signed, William Glover Bishop and Lucy Glover Bishop. Don't know what this connection is. Possible marriage connection? (Helen B. Smith believes that Lucy was Lucy Glover, possible first wife of William Glover Bishop.) This information was provided by a James Bishop to Mailande Schrum and forwarded to me. "Charles H. Bishop"

Helen B. Smith thinks that Wm may have also had a daughter Nancy who married Samuel Turner who went to Jefferson Co., AL.......DNB

  1. 2.  BISHOP, Henry was born between 1700 and 1705 in Prince George Co., Virginia (son of BISHOP, John and Sarah); died in 1782.

    Notes:

The children of Henry Bishop were "straightened out" by Michael Bishop of Arlington, TX, with assistance from Mailande Schrum. This confirms, without solid proof, that the Spartanburg Bishops descend from Capt. John Bishop.

    Southampton Co., VA Marriages

BISHOP, Edmund BLOW, Elizabeth 25 Jan 1792

The following will seems to support another son, James:
In the name of God Amen I, James Bishop, of the County of Prince George and State of Virginia being in a low state of health but of perfect mind and memory do make and ordain this my last will and testament --- Item (?) I leave my Negro woman Angelica and her son Henry free. I also leave all my somos(???) to Angelica her life and at her death to her son Henry. I give all my household and kitchen furniture, plantation utensils, stock of all kinds, crops of corn V. to Angelica her life at her death the balance to her son Henry --- It is also my wish that my Negroes, ???, Jimmy and Polly should be hired out for the support of my
Negro woman Angelica and her son Henry until her death and then to go to Henry (?).
I also wish that my Brother George Bishop['s?] son John Edmond Bishop should have my small gun --- it is my desire that my just debts should be paid out of such property as my executor may think best to be sold. This I acknowledge to be my last will and testament. Given under my hand and seal this sixteenth (?) day of March 1825.

Mailande Schrum: The James Bishop who wrote a will in 1825 could have been a descendant of James, son of John and Sarah (Harmon?) or he could have been a descendant of Richard Bishop who appears in Prince George records c.1719 (don't have exact date in front of me). Richard may have been a son of John and Sarah Lawrence born after Mary Lawrence Rose wrote her will in 1677........DNB

Generation: 5

  1. 16.  BISHOP, Capt. John was born about 1612 in England; died between 1655 and 1656 in Charles Co., Virginia.

    Notes:

In his great-grandson's will (Asa, b. 1753), said to have been one of the earliest settlers in Virginia, settling on the south side of the James River, above old Jamestown, and was of old English stock.

Capt. John came to the US on the ship "Paule" in 1635. He left the Port of London 6 July 1635. [I left this in, but it is unlikely that it is correct. The John who came over on the Paule more likely is the one described in THE BISHOP FAMILY, discussed below.]

There is a great deal of confusion of the John Bishop line shown by Bobby Gerald Adams in THE BISHOP FAMILY, 1982, and the Capt. John Bishop line.

Some think his wife Elizabeth may have been the sister of George Menefee/Menifee, but I think that the other John Bishop (shown by B.G. Adams) is a much better candidate........DNB
may have had a son James born after coming to America
    Burgess 1644, 1652, & 1653
    estate settled 4/1656
settled s. side of James River

John married BOOKER, Elizabeth before 1635. Elizabeth died in 1656 in Charles Co., Virginia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 17.  BOOKER, Elizabeth died in 1656 in Charles Co., Virginia.

    Notes:

Elizabeth is not proved to be Elizabeth Booker, but Mary Elizabeth Sanders; 2332 Wisteria Street; Baton Rouge, LA 70806 offered a strong argument, based on much research, that she was Elizabeth Booker, sister of Roger Booker and sister of George Menefie's first wife. The Menefie-Booker-etc. connections shown are based on her conclusions, in a letter of 7/25/1997 to Mailande Schrum, who sent me a copy......DNB
