When a small boy he went with his parents to DeWitt county, Illinois, where he grew to manhood. On New Year's day, 1869, he was married to Grace H. Mitchell. To this union were born nine children . Mrs. Cora A. Duvall, of Des Moines, Iowa; Louis D., of Leon; Mary E., who died at the age of 11 months; Mrs. Lena May Cowles, of Des Moines, Iowa; Clive H., of St. Joseph, Mo.; Mrs. Nellie Opal Co field, of Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. Gertrude Hunt, of Imogene, Iowa; Mrs. Grace H. He confessed faith in Christ when about 27 years of age, and became a member of the Methodist church, and has all the year remained a consistent and faithful christian. He leaves to mourn his loss his devoted wife, five daughters, three sons, 32 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. We feel that our loss is his eternal gain . All of his children were with him during his last illness except on daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Hunt, who was unable to come, as she was ill, recovering from an operation. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church on Wednesday, April 14th, conducted by Rev. J. E. Studebaker, pastor of the Brethren church. Six grandsons of the deceased officiated as pall bearers. Roscoe, Leo and Glen Duvall, Ocie Garber, Harold Hunt and Dwight Cofield. The services were largely attended, and the American Legion performed the last rites at the cemetery. Interment was in the Leon Cemetery. | |
