William S. and Sarah Tyler and Family

William Spencer Tyler was born Feb. 21, 1834 at Luddington, Leicestershire, England. He came to America in 1850 and settled in New York City, where he worked in a piano and organ factory. He became a citizen of the United States in 1859. Sarah Jane Purvis was born in Ireland on Feb. 15, 1828. She and William Tyler were married on Dec. 20, 1855 in New York City.
In the fall of 1861, the family moved to Red Wing, Minn., where they operated a truck farm and raised vegetables and strawberries. They cam e to South Dakota in 1880 and homesteaded in Sherman Township, two miles south and two miles east of White. William and Sarah were members of the Presbyterian Church. William joined the I.O.O.F. In Red Wing, Minn., in 1865, and was a member of that organization for over 50 years. Sarah died Oct. 24, 1889 and William died Jan 29, 1916.
