John and Rebecca Tyler and Family

John Silas Tyler, son of William and Sarah Purvis Tyler..........................Red Wing, Minn., where he received his education. Rebecca Taylor was born in Ontario, Canada on March 18, 1856. She moved to Minnesota during her childhood, and received her education in Goodhue County. On Jan, 30 1884, she married John Tyler at Red Wing, Minn.
In 1886, John and Rebecca and their daughters, Della Rebecca, age two and Mattie Ada, age three months, moved to a farm in Sherman Township four and one-half miles southeast of White. In 1908, John retired from farming and they moved into White, where they spent the remainder of their lives with the exception of several winters in Long Beach, Calif.
While living near and in White, John Tyler built several houses in town. He was also owner of a garage and broom factory. The broom factory was operated for a time by his son-in-law, John Barg. After the death of their daughter Della Barg in 1913, John and Rebecca raised four grandchildren until they were grown and educated.
Rebecca Tyler passed away on Dec. 1, 1929. On June 30, 1930, John married Alice Tyler of Red Wing, Minn. John passed away on Jan 16, 1938, at Luther Hospital in Watertown.
Della Rebecca Tyler was born Dec. 30, 1884, married John Barg and had four children; Avis, born Dec. 21, 1905, Earl, born Nov. 26, 1907, Fayette, born May 25, 1911, and John, born March 25, 1913. Della passed away on Oct. 21, 1913. Mattie Ada Tyler was born May 6, 1886, married O.S. Potter, and their history appears separately in this section.

William S. and Sarah Tyler and Family

William Spencer Tyler was born Feb. 21, 1834 at Luddington, Leicestershire, England. He came to America in 1850 and settled in New York City, where he worked in a piano and organ factory. He became a citizen of the United States in 1859. Sarah Jane Purvis was born in Ireland on Feb. 15, 1828. She and William Tyler were married on Dec. 20, 1855 in New York City.
In the fall of 1861, the family moved to Red Wing, Minn., where they operated a truck farm and raised vegetables and strawberries. They cam e to South Dakota in 1880 and homesteaded in Sherman Township, two miles south and two miles east of White. William and Sarah were members of the Presbyterian Church. William joined the I.O.O.F. In Red Wing, Minn., in 1865, and was a member of that organization for over 50 years. Sarah died Oct. 24, 1889 and William died Jan 29, 1916.
