  In his great-grandson's will (Asa, b. 1753), said to have been one of the earliest settlers in Virginia, settling on the south side of the James River, above old Jamestown, and was of old English stock. Capt. John came to the US on the ship "Paule" in 1635. He left the Port of London 6 July 1635. [I left this in, but it is unlikely that it is correct. The John who came over on the Paule more likely is the one described in THE BISHOP FAMILY, discussed below.] There is a great deal of confusion of the John Bishop line shown by Bobby Gerald Adams in THE BISHOP FAMILY, 1982, and the Capt. John Bishop line. Some think his wife Elizabeth may have been the sister of George Menefee/Menifee, but I think that the other John Bishop (shown by B.G. Adams) is a much better candidate........DNB may have had a son James born after coming to America Burgess 1644, 1652, & 1653 estate settled 4/1656 settled s. side of James River
