  It is commonly believed that James Clayton McCall was buried on July 7th, 1863 on the now submerged Small Pox Island. Research has proven that the first burial on Small Pox Island occurred in August 1863 and continued until March 1865. Since James died before any other recorded burials on Small Pox Island, he must have been buried in the Confederate Cemetery in Alton, Madison Co., Illinois. This deduction was made with the assistance of Don Huber, Town Supervisor, City of Alton, Madison Co., Illinois during a phone conversation on Feb. 10, 2003.........FS3 NOTES: 1st Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry 1st Cavalry Regiment was assembled during the spring of 1862. Its companies were recruited in the counties of Carroll, De Soto, Tishomingo, Itawamba, Quitman, Noxubee, Bolivar and Pontotoc. The unit served in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, then was assigned to W.H. Jackson's, Ross', Cosby's, and F.C. Armstrong's Brigade, Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. It contained 22 officers and 220 men in July 1862 and confronted the Federals in various conflicts in Mississippi. Later the regiment was involved in the operations in North Alabama and Middle Tennessee where its casualties were 2 killed and 27 wounded. It went on to fight in North Georgia and Alabama but only a few surrendered in May 1865. The field officers were Colonel R.A. Pinson, Lieutenant Colonel F.A. Montgomery, and Majors John S. HE WAS CAPTURED BY THE UNION ARMY AT CORENTH MISSISSIPPI, SENT TO MEMPHIS WHERE HE WAS SENT UP THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER TO ALTON ILL. THERE HE WAS IMPRISONED ON AN ISLAND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RIVER. HE WAS TO BE SENT TO NC. OR SC TO BE EXCHANGED FOR A UNION PRISONER BUT A FEW DAYS BEFORE HE WAS TO LEAVE HE GOT SICK AND DIED. HE WAS BURIED ON THE ISLAND WHICH IS NOW UNDER WATER AND HAS BEEN CALLED "SMALL POX ISLAND" BECAUSE SO MANY MEN DIED OF SMALLPOX THERE. JAMES MC CALL'S NAME APPEARS ON A MONUMENT IN ALTON IL. PLACED THERE TO HONOR THE MEN WHO DIED AND WERE BURIED ON THE ISLAND. (PICTURE OF MONUMENT ON FILE). THE SAD PART ABOUT THIS IS HIS CHILDREN NEVER KNEW WHETHER HE WAS KILLED IN THE WAR OR NOT. THEIR STEPMOTHER PUT THEM IN AN ORPHANAGE WHEN HE LEFT AND NEVER CAME BACK FOR THEM. THEY WERE TAKEN OUT OF THE ORPHANAGE AND PLACED WITH DIFFERENT FAMILIES. THE ORPHANAGE WAS LATER BURNED BY THE UNION ARMIES. MARY JANE MC CALL THOUGHT HER FATHER MAY HAVE RETURNED AND HER STEPMOTHER TOLD HIM THEY WERE KILLED IN THE FIRE. BUT MARY JANE NEVER KNEW HER FATHER HAD DIED AND HAD NOT RETURNED.
